The hybrid event will bring together healthcare professionals working in medical genetics and rare diseases and focus on access to genomic medicine in rural and underserved areas.
Helena, MT – Shodair Children’s Hospital has announced a hybrid scientific conference called “Wide Open Spaces” to be held on 16 and 17 June 2023. The event will take place at the Great Northern Hotel in Helena, Montana, and online through the vFairs virtual event platform. Interested attendees can register for the event here.
Wide Open Spaces is presented by Shodair Children’s Hospital’s Department of Medical Genetics, which has had a medical genetics program for nearly 50 years serving rural patients in an outreach model. This hybrid scientific conference aims to bridge the divide between genetic testing and patients who need it.
Genetic testing has become more available and accurate, but access to genetic medicine is challenging in many areas. The event will bring together healthcare providers and genetics professionals to talk about streamlining access to genomic medicine in rural and underserved areas.

“Our ability to diagnose genetic conditions has improved dramatically over the past decade. Now we need to focus on how to provide equitable access to genetic care, regardless of whether a patient lives in rural Montana or near a large medical center,” says Corbin Schwanke, Chief Administrative Officer of Medical Genetics at Shodair Children’s Hospital.
Muhammad Younas, the CEO of vFairs says, “We’re glad to help the healthcare industry work towards streamlining access to genetic testing in rural areas. The hybrid model of the vFairs platform will help healthcare professionals from all locations to attend the event and learn.”
